Mc Calla AL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Mc Calla AL. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of variables to consider. For example, many students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have identified some that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole things that need to be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should help mold your final judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Mc Calla AL electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Mc Calla AL. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Alabama technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Alabama junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Alabama colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Mc Calla AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mc Calla AL can carry out a vast array of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around four to five years of experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Mc Calla AL student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Mc Calla AL are also reduced and some of the study materials may be available on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Mc Calla AL electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Mc Calla AL region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Mc Calla AL school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Mc Calla AL graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Mc Calla AL area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Mc Calla AL electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Mc Calla residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Mc Calla AL, check that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

It’s a must that any electrical tech school that you are considering includes a considerable amount of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses differ in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every training program provides different possibilities for certification also. Perhaps The ideal way to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the teachers and students. Invest some time to monitor a few classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you pick is the right one for you. With the right training, effort and commitment, the end result will be a new career as a professional electrician in Mc Calla AL.
