Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Saginaw AL electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Saginaw AL. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Alabama vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Alabama community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Alabama colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Saginaw AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Saginaw AL can undertake a vast array of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly about four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Driving expenses from Saginaw AL are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Saginaw AL electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Saginaw AL area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Saginaw AL program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Saginaw AL students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Saginaw AL area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Saginaw AL electrical company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Saginaw residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Saginaw AL, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
