Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Thorne Bay AK electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Thorne Bay AK. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Alaska technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Alaska junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Alaska institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to take in the future.
