Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Almyra AR electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Almyra AR. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Arkansas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are offered by Arkansas community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Arkansas colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.
