Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Huntington AR electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Huntington AR. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Arkansas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are provided by Arkansas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Arkansas colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling costs from Huntington AR are also lessened and some of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Huntington AR electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Huntington AR region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other variables that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Huntington AR program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Huntington AR students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Huntington AR area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Huntington AR electrical company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Huntington home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Huntington AR, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

Classroom education needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Training programs vary in length and the type of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Every program provides different options for certification also. Perhaps the best means to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and faculty.
