But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have found a few that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. Although cost and location are important, they are not the sole qualifications that must be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Western Grove AR electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Western Grove AR. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Arkansas trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are provided by Arkansas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Arkansas institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Western Grove AR electrician wiring boxElectricians in Western Grove AR can carry out a wide range of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving costs from Western Grove AR are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Western Grove AR electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Western Grove AR region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Western Grove AR program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Western Grove AR graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Western Grove AR area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Western Grove AR electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Western Grove home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Western Grove AR, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
