Ocean View DE electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Ocean View DE. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of factors to consider. For example, many prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. When they have found some that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are significant, they are not the sole things that must be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your ultimate judgment when picking an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional choices that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Ocean View DE electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Ocean View DE. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Delaware vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are provided by Delaware community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Delaware colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Ocean View DE electrician wiring boxElectricians in Ocean View DE can undertake a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Ocean View DE student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more accommodating alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Commuting costs from Ocean View DE are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Ocean View DE electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Ocean View DE region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Ocean View DE program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Ocean View DE graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Ocean View DE area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Ocean View DE electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Ocean View residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Ocean View DE, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
