Alto GA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Alto GA. But with so many technical schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly since there are a number of factors to examine. For example, some students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have located several that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the cheapest tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the only qualifications that must be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should help mold your ultimate decision when picking an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Alto GA electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Alto GA. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Georgia technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are provided by Georgia community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Georgia institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Alto GA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Alto GA can undertake a vast array of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Alto GA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning can be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Alto GA are also lessened and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Alto GA electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Alto GA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Alto GA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Alto GA students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Alto GA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Alto GA electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Alto home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Alto GA, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

Classes need to be smaller in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and certificate or degree will best serve your needs. Every training program provides different possibilities for certification also. Perhaps The ideal way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the teachers and students. Take the time to monitor a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the program you select is the best one for you.
