For instance, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. After they have located a few that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the sole qualifications that need to be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Appling GA electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Appling GA. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Georgia technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by Georgia community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Georgia colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Appling GA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Appling GA can perform a vast array of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Appling GA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more convenient alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving costs from Appling GA are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Appling GA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Appling GA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Appling GA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Appling GA graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Appling GA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Appling GA electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Appling residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Appling GA, check that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
