Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Jekyll Island GA electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Jekyll Island GA. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Georgia vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Georgia community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Georgia institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Jekyll Island GA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Jekyll Island GA can carry out a wide range of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Jekyll Island GA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Jekyll Island GA are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Jekyll Island GA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Jekyll Island GA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other variables that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Jekyll Island GA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Jekyll Island GA students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Jekyll Island GA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Jekyll Island GA electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Jekyll Island residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Jekyll Island GA, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island is located off the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia, in Glynn County. It is one of the Sea Islands and one of the Golden Isles of Georgia barrier islands. The island is owned by the State of Georgia and run by a self-sustaining, self-governing body.[1]

Long used seasonally by indigenous peoples of the region, beginning in the colonial era, some of its lands became privately owned. A few structures still stand made of tabby, a coastal building material of crushed oyster shells. The island was developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was evacuated during World War II by order of the US government. In 1947 the state of Georgia acquired all the property, for security and preservation.

A popular tourist destination, the island has beaches frequented by vacationers. Guided tours of the Landmark Historic District are available. Bike trails, walks along the beaches and sandbars, and Summer Waves, a water park, are among the active attractions. The historic district features numerous impressive and ambitious buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The island is also full of wildlife, consisting of many different mammals, reptiles, and birds living and breeding in the island's inland salt marshes. In 2018, Architectural Digest named Jekyll Island the 11th most beautiful small town in America.[2]
