Jonesboro GA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Jonesboro GA. But with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly because there are so many points to evaluate. For example, many prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their residence. After they have located some that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that must be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Jonesboro GA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Jonesboro GA. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Georgia vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Georgia community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Georgia colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Jonesboro GA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Jonesboro GA can undertake a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you choose not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Jonesboro GA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical alternative for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Jonesboro GA are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Jonesboro GA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Jonesboro GA region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Jonesboro GA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Jonesboro GA students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Jonesboro GA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Jonesboro GA electrical company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Jonesboro residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Jonesboro GA, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrical Maintenance Training and wanting more information on the topic Education Required To Be An Electrician. But as we have covered in this article, there are many things that you will need to assess and compare between the training programs you are considering. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training program that you are evaluating includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses differ in duration and the kind of credential offered, so you will need to decide what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Each program provides unique possibilities for certification as well. Probably the best way to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the teachers and students. Take the time to sit in on a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the school you select is the best one for you.
