Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Mount Airy GA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Mount Airy GA. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Georgia trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by Georgia junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Georgia colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around four to five years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to pass in the future.
