Rock Spring GA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Rock Spring GA. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of variables to evaluate. For instance, some prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have identified a few that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. While cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Rock Spring GA electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Rock Spring GA. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Georgia technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are offered by Georgia junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Georgia institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Rock Spring GA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rock Spring GA can perform a multitude of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Rock Spring GA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more practical alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting costs from Rock Spring GA are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed online also. All of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Rock Spring GA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Rock Spring GA area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Rock Spring GA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rock Spring GA students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Rock Spring GA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Rock Spring GA electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Rock Spring home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Rock Spring GA, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
