Hanalei HI electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Hanalei HI. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly since there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, many students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have located several that are within commuting distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the only qualifications that must be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your final decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Hanalei HI electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Hanalei HI. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Hawaii vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are offered by Hawaii community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Hawaii colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Hanalei HI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Hanalei HI can carry out a multitude of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you choose not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Hanalei HI student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is choosing an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Hanalei HI are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Hanalei HI electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Hanalei HI region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Hanalei HI program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Hanalei HI students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Hanalei HI area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Hanalei HI electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Hanalei residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Hanalei HI, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

But as we have addressed in this article, there are several things that you will need to evaluate and compare between the schools you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training program that you are assessing includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes need to be small in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Each training program offers unique options for certification as well. Perhaps the best means to research your short list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the faculty and students.
