Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Muddy IL electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Muddy IL. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Illinois vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are offered by Illinois junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Illinois colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Commuting expenses from Muddy IL are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these advantages can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Muddy IL electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Muddy IL area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Muddy IL school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Muddy IL graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Muddy IL area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Muddy IL electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Muddy home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Muddy IL, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
