Chrisney IN electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Chrisney IN. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of factors to evaluate. For instance, some prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have located several that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the sole factors that should be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Chrisney IN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Chrisney IN. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Indiana vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by Indiana community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Indiana colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Chrisney IN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Chrisney IN can perform a vast array of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Chrisney IN student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Driving costs from Chrisney IN are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Chrisney IN electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Chrisney IN area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Chrisney IN program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Chrisney IN students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Chrisney IN area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Chrisney IN electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Chrisney home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Chrisney IN, check that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
