Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Satanta KS electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Satanta KS. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Kansas vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are provided by Kansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Kansas colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.
