Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Livermore KY electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Livermore KY. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Kentucky technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by Kentucky junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Kentucky colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Livermore KY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Livermore KY can undertake a wide range of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving expenses from Livermore KY are also minimized and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Livermore KY electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Livermore KY area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Livermore KY school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Livermore KY students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Livermore KY area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Livermore KY electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Livermore home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Livermore KY, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Livermore, Kentucky

Livermore (locally /ˈlɪvərmɔːr/)[2] is a home rule-class city[3] located at the confluence of the Green and Rough rivers in McLean County in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The population was 1,482 at the time of the year 2000 U.S. census. It is included in the Owensboro metropolitan area.

Livermore is located at 37°29′28″N 87°8′7″W / 37.49111°N 87.13528°W / 37.49111; -87.13528 (37.490987, -87.135340).[4] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all land.

William Brown founded the city in 1837 as Brown's Landing, but the post office established the next year took the name Livermore. The origin is disputed: some historians trace it to an otherwise-unknown shopkeeper named James Livermore, others to civil engineer Alonzo Livermore who helped construct a dam across the Green River at Rumsey.[2] The city was formally incorporated by the state assembly in 1850.[5][6]
