Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Russell Springs KY electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Russell Springs KY. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Kentucky trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are offered by Kentucky junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Kentucky institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Russell Springs KY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Russell Springs KY can undertake a vast array of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Russell Springs KY are also reduced and some of the study materials may be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Russell Springs KY electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Russell Springs KY region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Russell Springs KY school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Russell Springs KY grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Russell Springs KY area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Russell Springs KY electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Russell Springs residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Russell Springs KY, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
