Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

West Bethel ME electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near West Bethel ME. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Maine technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are offered by Maine community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Maine colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

West Bethel ME electrician wiring boxElectricians in West Bethel ME can perform a wide range of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

West Bethel ME student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling expenses from West Bethel ME are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask West Bethel ME electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the West Bethel ME region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the West Bethel ME school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help West Bethel ME grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with West Bethel ME area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local West Bethel ME electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your West Bethel residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near West Bethel ME, verify that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrician Training and wanting more information on the topic Electrical License Classes. But as we have discussed in this article, there are many things that you will need to assess and compare among the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a must that any electrical training program that you are examining includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education should offer a real-world perspective, and the training program should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and degree or certificate will best satisfy your needs. Every training program provides different possibilities for certification also. Perhaps the best approach to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the faculty and students. Invest some time to attend a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the program you select is the right one for you. Bethel, Maine

Bethel is a town in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,607 at the 2010 census. It includes the villages of West Bethel and South Bethel. The town is home to Gould Academy, a private preparatory school, and is near the Sunday River ski resort.

An Abenaki Indian village was once located on the north side of the Androscoggin River, but had been abandoned before its subsequent English settlement. In 1769, the township was granted as Sudbury-Canada by the Massachusetts General Court to Josiah Richardson of Sudbury, Massachusetts and others (or their heirs) for services at the Battle of Quebec in 1690. It was first settled in 1774 when Nathaniel Segar of Newton, Massachusetts started clearing the land.

The Revolutionary War, however, delayed many grantees from taking up their claims. Only 10 families resided at Sudbury-Canada when it was plundered on August 3, 1781 during the last Indian attack in Maine. Two inhabitants, Benjamin Clark and Nathaniel Segar, were abducted and held captive in Quebec until the war's conclusion, after which the community grew rapidly. On June 10, 1796, Sudbury-Canada Plantation was incorporated as Bethel,[5] the name taken from the Book of Genesis and meaning "House of God."[6][7]
