Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Copemish MI electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Copemish MI. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Michigan trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are provided by Michigan community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Michigan institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Copemish MI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Copemish MI can undertake a wide range of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Points to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Copemish MI electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Copemish MI area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Copemish MI school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Copemish MI students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Copemish MI area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Copemish MI electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Copemish residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Copemish MI, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
