Walker MI electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Walker MI. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly since there are a number of factors to examine. For example, many potential students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their home. When they have located several that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole things that must be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Walker MI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Walker MI. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Michigan technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Michigan community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Michigan colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Walker MI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Walker MI can undertake a multitude of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Walker MI student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Travelling expenses from Walker MI are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Walker MI electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Walker MI area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Walker MI school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Walker MI graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Walker MI area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Walker MI electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Walker residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Walker MI, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
