Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Starbuck MN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Starbuck MN. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Minnesota trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are offered by Minnesota junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Minnesota institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Starbuck was platted in the spring of 1882, is a village of the Northern Pacific railway, adjoining the western end of Lake Minnewaska.
