Mayview MO electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Mayview MO. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are a number of points to examine. For example, some potential students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have found a few that are within driving range, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that need to be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your final judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are accessible.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Mayview MO electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Mayview MO. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Missouri technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are provided by Missouri community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Missouri institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Mayview MO electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mayview MO can carry out a multitude of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Mayview MO student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs have become more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, distance learning can be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Travelling costs from Mayview MO are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Mayview MO electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Mayview MO region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Mayview MO program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Mayview MO students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Mayview MO area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Mayview MO electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Mayview home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Mayview MO, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Vocational School Electrician and wanting more information on the topic Training Courses For Electricians. But as we have discussed in this article, there are many factors that you will need to evaluate and compare between the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training that you are reviewing includes a considerable amount of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be small in size and every student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Programs vary in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to decide what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every program provides different options for certification as well. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the faculty and students.
