Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Wolf Point MT electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Wolf Point MT. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Montana technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by Montana junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Montana colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally around four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Wolf Point MT students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Wolf Point MT electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Wolf Point home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Wolf Point MT, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those options.
