Stantonsburg NC electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Stantonsburg NC. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are a number of points to consider. For instance, many prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have identified a few that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole qualifications that should be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should help mold your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Stantonsburg NC electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Stantonsburg NC. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by North Carolina technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by North Carolina junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some North Carolina institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Stantonsburg NC electrician wiring boxElectricians in Stantonsburg NC can perform a vast array of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally around four to five years of experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Commuting expenses from Stantonsburg NC are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Stantonsburg NC electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Stantonsburg NC area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Stantonsburg NC school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Stantonsburg NC students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Stantonsburg NC area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Stantonsburg NC electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Stantonsburg residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Stantonsburg NC, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
