Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Wyndmere ND electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Wyndmere ND. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by North Dakota vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are provided by North Dakota junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain North Dakota colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Wyndmere ND student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have contemplated is choosing an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting costs from Wyndmere ND are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Wyndmere ND electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Wyndmere ND region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Wyndmere ND school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Wyndmere ND grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Wyndmere ND area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Wyndmere ND electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Wyndmere residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Wyndmere ND, verify that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
