For example, some students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the only things that need to be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Faxon OK electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Faxon OK. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Oklahoma vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Oklahoma community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Oklahoma colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Faxon OK electrician wiring boxElectricians in Faxon OK can carry out a wide range of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Questions to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Faxon OK electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Faxon OK region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Faxon OK program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Faxon OK grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Faxon OK area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Faxon OK electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Faxon home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Faxon OK, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
