Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Pamplico SC electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Pamplico SC. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by South Carolina vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by South Carolina community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain South Carolina institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Pamplico SC electrician wiring boxElectricians in Pamplico SC can carry out a multitude of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Pamplico SC student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more practical option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Pamplico SC are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Pamplico SC electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Pamplico SC region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Pamplico SC program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Pamplico SC students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Pamplico SC area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Pamplico SC electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Pamplico home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Pamplico SC, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Accredited Electrician Certificate Programs and wanting more information on the topic Journeyman Electrician Classes. But as we have addressed in this article, there are many things that you will need to examine and compare between the training programs you are looking at. It’s a must that any electrician training program that you are assessing includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be small in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and certificate or degree will best fulfill your needs. Each training program provides unique possibilities for certification as well. Probably the best means to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Invest some time to sit in on some classes.
