You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Utah trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Utah community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Utah institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction.
