Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Madison Heights VA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Madison Heights VA. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Virginia trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are provided by Virginia community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Virginia institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Madison Heights VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Madison Heights VA can undertake a vast array of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more practical option for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Madison Heights VA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Madison Heights VA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Madison Heights VA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Madison Heights VA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Madison Heights VA students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Madison Heights VA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Madison Heights VA electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Madison Heights residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Madison Heights VA, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
