Melfa VA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Melfa VA. But with so many technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Particularly because there are so many points to consider. For example, some students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have identified several that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole things that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your ultimate decision when picking an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Melfa VA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Melfa VA. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Virginia trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by Virginia junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Virginia institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Melfa VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Melfa VA can carry out a vast array of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Melfa VA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Travelling costs from Melfa VA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Melfa VA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Melfa VA region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Melfa VA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Melfa VA grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Melfa VA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Melfa VA electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Melfa residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Melfa VA, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
