Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Elk Mountain WY electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Elk Mountain WY. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Wyoming trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Wyoming junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Wyoming institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you select not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.
