Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Smoot WY electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Smoot WY. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Wyoming trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are offered by Wyoming community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Wyoming institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.
