Kurtistown HI electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Kurtistown HI. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of variables to consider. For instance, many students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their home. When they have identified some that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the only things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your final decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Kurtistown HI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Kurtistown HI. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Hawaii vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are provided by Hawaii community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Hawaii institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Kurtistown HI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Kurtistown HI can undertake a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Kurtistown HI student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more practical option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving costs from Kurtistown HI are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Kurtistown HI electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Kurtistown HI area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Kurtistown HI program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Kurtistown HI graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Kurtistown HI area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Kurtistown HI electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Kurtistown residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Kurtistown HI, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
