Trafford AL electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Trafford AL. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of factors to examine. For instance, many potential students will start by searching for schools that are close to their residence. When they have located several that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the only qualifications that need to be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your ultimate judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Trafford AL electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Trafford AL. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Alabama trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Alabama junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Alabama colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Trafford AL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Trafford AL can carry out a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Trafford AL student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Trafford AL are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Trafford AL electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Trafford AL area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Trafford AL school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Trafford AL grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Trafford AL area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Trafford AL electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Trafford home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Trafford AL, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
