Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Brevig Mission AK electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Brevig Mission AK. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Alaska technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are offered by Alaska junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Alaska institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Otherwise, ask a local Brevig Mission AK electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Brevig Mission residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.
