Mammoth AZ electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Mammoth AZ. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly since there are a number of factors to evaluate. For instance, many potential students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have identified some that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the sole factors that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Mammoth AZ electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Mammoth AZ. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Arizona vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are offered by Arizona community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Arizona colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Mammoth AZ student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning can be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Travelling costs from Mammoth AZ are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Mammoth AZ electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Mammoth AZ region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Mammoth AZ program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Mammoth AZ students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Mammoth AZ area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Mammoth AZ electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Mammoth residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Mammoth AZ, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
