Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Sulphur Rock AR electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Sulphur Rock AR. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Arkansas trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are offered by Arkansas community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Arkansas colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Sulphur Rock AR electrician wiring boxElectricians in Sulphur Rock AR can undertake a wide range of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Sulphur Rock AR student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more convenient option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting expenses from Sulphur Rock AR are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available on line as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Sulphur Rock AR electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Sulphur Rock AR region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Sulphur Rock AR program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a quality education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Sulphur Rock AR grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Sulphur Rock AR area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Sulphur Rock AR electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Sulphur Rock home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Sulphur Rock AR, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
