Earlimart CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Earlimart CA. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are so many points to evaluate. For example, many prospective students will start by looking for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have found several that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole things that must be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Earlimart CA electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Earlimart CA. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by California vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain California institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Earlimart CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Earlimart CA can undertake a multitude of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Earlimart CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning can be a more convenient option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting costs from Earlimart CA are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available on line as well. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Earlimart CA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Earlimart CA region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Earlimart CA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Earlimart CA students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Earlimart CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Earlimart CA electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Earlimart residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Earlimart CA, check that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
