Gasquet CA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Gasquet CA. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of points to examine. For example, many students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their home. When they have found a few that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the most affordable tuition. Although location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole qualifications that must be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Gasquet CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Gasquet CA. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by California technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by California junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some California institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Gasquet CA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Commuting costs from Gasquet CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Gasquet CA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Gasquet CA region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Gasquet CA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Gasquet CA graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Gasquet CA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Gasquet CA electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Gasquet residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Gasquet CA, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to evaluate and compare between the training programs you are looking at. It’s a necessity that any electrical tech school that you are assessing includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will need to determine what length of program and certificate or degree will best fulfill your needs. Each training program offers different options for certification as well. Perhaps the best approach to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the faculty and students. Take the time to sit in on some classes.
