Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Selma CA electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Selma CA. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by California technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are offered by California community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain California institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Selma CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Selma CA can undertake a multitude of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Selma CA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Travelling costs from Selma CA are also lessened and some of the study materials may be available online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Selma CA electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Selma CA area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Selma CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Selma CA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Selma CA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Selma CA electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Selma home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Selma CA, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
