How to Choose the Right Electrician Trade School near Tahoe City California

Tahoe City CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Tahoe City CA. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly because there are so many variables to evaluate. For example, many prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have identified some that are within driving range, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the only qualifications that need to be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Tahoe City CA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Tahoe City CA. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by California vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain California institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Tahoe City CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Tahoe City CA can undertake a vast array of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Tahoe City CA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools have become more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more accommodating option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving costs from Tahoe City CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Tahoe City CA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Tahoe City CA region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Tahoe City CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Tahoe City CA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Tahoe City CA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Tahoe City CA electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Tahoe City home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Tahoe City CA, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
