Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Larkspur CO electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Larkspur CO. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Colorado trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Colorado community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Colorado colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Larkspur CO electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Larkspur residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction.
