Mystic CT electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Mystic CT. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many variables to evaluate. For instance, some students will start by searching for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have located several that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the only things that must be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when selecting an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Mystic CT electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Mystic CT. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Connecticut trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are provided by Connecticut junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Connecticut institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Mystic CT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mystic CT can carry out a wide range of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about four to five years of experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Mystic CT student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning can be a more accommodating option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Mystic CT are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Mystic CT electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Mystic CT region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Mystic CT school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Mystic CT students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Mystic CT area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Mystic CT electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Mystic home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Mystic CT, check that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

But as we have addressed in this article, there are several factors that you will need to assess and compare between the training programs you are looking at. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training that you are assessing includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and every student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to offer a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to decide what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every training program provides different possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps the best approach to research your short list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Take the time to sit in on some classes. Mystic, Connecticut

Historically, Mystic was a leading seaport of the area, and the story of Mystic's nautical connection is told at Mystic Seaport, the nation's largest maritime museum[2] which has preserved a number of sailing ships, most notably the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan. The village is located on the Mystic River, which flows into Long Island Sound, providing access to the sea. The Mystic River Bascule Bridge crosses the river in the center of the village. According to the Mystic River Historical Society, the name "Mystic" is derived from the Pequot term "missi-tuk", describing a large river whose waters are driven into waves by tides or wind. The population was 4,205 at the 2010 census.[3]

Before the 17th century, the Pequot people[4] lived in this portion of southeastern Connecticut. They were in control of a considerable amount of territory, extending toward the Pawcatuck River to the east and the Connecticut River to the west.

To the northwest, the Five Nations of the Iroquois dominated the land linked by the Great Lakes and the Hudson River, allowing trading to occur between the Iroquois and the Dutch. The Pequots were settled just distant enough to be secure from any danger that the Iroquois posed.[5] The Pequot War profoundly affected the Mystic area between 1636 and 1638. In May 1637, captains John Underhill and John Mason led a mission through Narragansett land, along with their allies the Narragansetts and Mohegans, and struck the Pequot Indian settlement in Mystic in the event which came to be known as the Mystic massacre.[6] On September 21, 1638, the colonists signed the Treaty of Hartford, officially ending the Pequot War.[7]
