Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Voluntown CT electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Voluntown CT. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Connecticut vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are provided by Connecticut junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Connecticut institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Voluntown CT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Voluntown CT can perform a wide range of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Voluntown CT student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Commuting costs from Voluntown CT are also minimized and some of the study materials can be accessed online also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Voluntown CT electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Voluntown CT region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Voluntown CT program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Voluntown CT graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Voluntown CT area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Voluntown CT electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Voluntown home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Voluntown CT, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
