Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Jasper FL electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Jasper FL. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Florida trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Florida community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Florida institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you choose not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.
