Rentz GA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Rentz GA. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of variables to examine. For example, some students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. When they have found several that are within driving distance, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the only things that must be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final judgment when choosing an electrician school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Rentz GA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Rentz GA. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Georgia technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Georgia community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Georgia institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Rentz GA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rentz GA can perform a wide range of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be acquired in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Rentz GA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more convenient choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling expenses from Rentz GA are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Rentz GA electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Rentz GA area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Rentz GA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rentz GA students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Rentz GA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Rentz GA electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Rentz home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Rentz GA, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
