Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Harvel IL electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Harvel IL. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Illinois vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are offered by Illinois junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Illinois institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Harvel IL students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Harvel IL electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Harvel home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Harvel IL, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those options.
