Okawville IL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Okawville IL. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are a number of points to consider. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have found several that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole things that must be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final judgment when selecting an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Okawville IL electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Okawville IL. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Illinois vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are provided by Illinois junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Illinois institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Okawville IL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Okawville IL can carry out a vast array of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

And as an added benefit many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Okawville IL are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Okawville IL electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Okawville IL area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Okawville IL program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Okawville IL grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Okawville IL area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Okawville IL electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Okawville residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Okawville IL, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
